Don’t Let The Weather Stop You Celebrating World Book Day

Nicola Wiseman

Yesterday marked World Book Day. This is a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and reading! Fun fact, it’s the biggest celebration of its own kind. It has been designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, as well as this it is celebrated in over 100 countries all over the world!

2018 marks the 21st anniversary of World Book Day, it encourages children of all ages to come together to celebrate and appreciate reading. The aim of World Book Day in the UK and Ireland, is to bring together and encourage children to have fun and enjoy exploring fantasy lands and worlds whilst learning. Encouraging children to read will not only create enjoyment in a world of fantasy but will also highly benefit their cognitive development. Evidence suggests that those children who read every day, not only perform better in reading tests, but also gain a broader vocabulary, have a better understanding of cultures and increase their general knowledge.

Some of the most popular costumes include Characters from:

·         Harry Potter

·         The Hunger Games

·         The BFG

·         The Very Hungry Caterpillar

·         Winnie-the-Pooh

·         The Cat In The Hat

·         Charlotte’s Web

·         The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

And many more!

World Book Day is in partnership with schools across the UK, they will be distributing more than 15 million £1 World Book Day book tokens. When you receive your book token, all you need to do is take it to your local book shop and swap it in for one of the then new and exclusive free £1 World Book Day books! The book token redemption period is from Monday February 27 - Sunday March 26.
